Design students at Newcastle College have entered the world of coffee culture by designing and making a range of wild and wonderful coffee sets, which they will sell in one of Newcastle’s most exclusive gift shops.

Twenty students from the college’s School of Creative Industries have put their impressive creativity to work on the humble cup and saucer and have produced a range of espresso sets that draw inspiration from transport design, alternative music  and even a space shuttle, to name but a few.

The students, who are all studying an Extended Diploma in 3D Design Level 3 at Newcastle College, were given the brief to produce six cups and six saucers by yumLush, which is to sell the espresso sets at its store in Gosforth.

The espresso sets represent the first time that the students will see their creations sold to the public, with each student receiving half of the £30 price tag if their sets are purchased. The sets go on sale at yumLush from Good Friday, March 29, and will be displayed until April 10, at which point they can be collected by buyers.

Simon Bolam, Tutor at Newcastle College’s School of Creative Industries, said: “This project has really inspired our 3D Design students and made them consider a wide range of factors associated with the commercial process. This is a true community programme and one which highlights just what can be achieved through engagement between industry and the talented students we have here at the college.”

The students will also be responsible for designing the packaging for their products and producing point-of-sale materials, giving them even more experience of the commercial process.

This project is the latest example of Newcastle College’s 3D Design students working closely with local industry. The same group of 20 students recently used their skills to reinvent or customise existing IKEA products, which they exhibited at the retailer’s Gateshead store.

Ken Boyle of yumLush said: “It’s an absolute pleasure to commission this project and to be part of such an exciting and creative initiative, myself and my customers are looking forward to seeing the final products in yumLush.”

Newcastle College photographic talent to go to auction

Photography Auction: Clockwise Top Joan Hall, Steph Bell, Michael Walker, Wiesia Bojko and Harinder Kaur

Photography Auction: Clockwise Top Joan Hall, Steph Bell, Michael Walker, Wiesia Bojko and Harinder Kaur

North East art lovers have the chance to snap up work from some of the region’s most up and coming photographers as part of an auction that will highlight the talents of students at Newcastle College.

Around 45 students studying Foundation Degree Photography at Newcastle College will see their work come under the hammer on Wednesday 27 March at the Tyneside Cinema, alongside a number of pictures taken by already established photographers.

The auction comes hot on the heels of the EX-25 photography exhibition earlier this year, which showcased work by former Newcastle College students who have achieved enormous success as professional photographers across the globe over the last 25 years – including work by North East born, award-winning Avatar animator, Paul Kavanagh.

The auction, which is now in its 11th year and will once again be held by North East auctioneers Anderson & Garland, will see 110 pictures put on sale, including work by successful local photographers Alex Telfer, Mark Westerby and Mark Taylor, who are also former students of the college.

London photographer Tom Miles has also donated a number of prints to the event, including portraits of intrepid explorer Ranulph Fiennes and comic actor Adrian Edmondson.

Graham Stouph, leader of the college’s Foundation Degree in Commercial Photography Practice, said: “It’s great for the students to exhibit their own work and it is always exciting for them to see what sort of price they bring at auction. It helps the students showcase their work, but also raises the profile of Newcastle College’s great photography department.”

The money raised from the event will fund a two week exhibition of students’ work at The Print Space in London from 3 July. Work on sale is likely to fetch sums ranging from £10 to £250.

John Oswell, owner of the Tyneside Coffee Rooms within Tyneside Cinema, which is where the auction will take place, said: “It is a great pleasure to be able to host this event as a way of supporting young artistic talent emerging from Newcastle College. The work sold at this auction has always been of the highest quality, with a huge amount of variety among the images.”

John Anderson of Anderson & Garland said: “I am always impressed by the standard of the work auctioned at this event. Photography has become more popular as an art form over recent years and this event allows people to get their hands on work by some of the region’s most talented up and coming photographic talent at an unbelievably affordable price.”

The auction takes place at the Tyneside Coffee Rooms, Tyneside Cinema, on Wednesday 27 March and will begin at 7pm, with a chance to view the images on offer from 6pm. Entry is free.

Newcastle College Trackfactor event to unearth North East musical talent

Trackfactor
Newcastle College is to host one of the region’s biggest talent scouting events as part of its commitment to establishing a new generation of original artists in the North East.

The Trackfactor artists and repertoire (A&R) event will see the ten hottest acts from the college’s Performance Academy play live in front of a panel of music industry moguls with the hope of landing a record contract and a step closer to launching a stellar career.

The event will provide the college’s music students with vital industry experience, with the A&R process used by record companies across the world as their main way of finding and nurturing new talent.

The event, which is to be held on Wednesday March 13, is part of one of the largest A&R processes ever carried out in the North East, with over 50 songs currently uploaded to YouTube, each written and performed by students at Newcastle College.

A top ten shortlist will be decided upon by the number of views that each song receives in addition to scores given by tutors and course leaders at the Performance Academy, before being performed live in front of the panel.

The overall winner will be awarded with the chance to perform at a top local venue and could be handed a life changing record deal.

In addition, the shortlisted entries will also be added to a compilation album that will showcase the wide ranging musical talent that can be found among students at Newcastle College. Each track will also be in the running to be released as an online single through the college’s own label, Push Puzzle Records.

The entrants, which range from Newcastle College students studying FDA Songwriting to those studying FDA Music Production for DJs, MCs and Producers, will be looking to impress a panel of judges that includes Richard Engel of record label Communion Music, which has released material by double Brit Award winner Ben Howard, Ross Millard from the North East’s own The Furtureheads and Peter Brewis from Mercury Music Prize Nominated Field Music.

Max Weedon, Section Manager for Music at Newcastle Collegesaid: “All of our courses are now strongly based around original music. This A&R process is designed to incorporate the views of the public and music industry to give our musicians realistic feedback which they can then hopefully use to perfect their songs.”

Music fans can view each song through the competition’s own YouTube Channel http://tinyurl.com/TrackFactor, as well as attend the Trackfactor event free of charge. The event will take place at the Peter Sarah theatre within Newcastle College’s Performance Academy on Rye Hill Campus from 2pm on Wednesday March 13.

Field Music frontman Peter Brewis, who recently joined Newcastle College as a Music Lecturer, said: “New original music is the lifeblood of the music industry and of the art. Newcastle College’s unique approach to music education is focused on encouraging students to create new music which can not only succeed in the world, but challenge and change it too.”

A brand new talent show like no other comes to Newcastle College on Thursday 21 March. The spectacular night will showcase the finest talent Newcastle College has to offer, along with some of the former cast from the West End musical Billy Elliot, all in aid of a charity which is close to the hearts of the performers, The Charlotte Leatherbarrow Foundation.

The show, entitled ‘Scouting for Talent’, will put the spotlight on the budding young singers, dancers, actors, bands and entertainers from the college’s Performance Academy, which has nurtured talents like Ant & Dec, Joe McElderry and Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards.

The students will perform in categories, with the ultimate goal of winning top show prize. Scouting for Talent will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 21 March in the Peter Sarah Theatre, Newcastle College’s Rye Hill campus.

Two of the original Billy Elliott cast members – Brooke Havana Bailey and Lucy Stephenson – will perform in the show. Brooke is studying a BTEC Extended Diploma and Lucy is studying a Foundation Degree both in Musical Theatre at Newcastle College.

Charlotte Leatherbarrow was a young Billy Elliott dancer who was tragically killed last year in a road traffic accident in London, on her way to her ballet class. In her honour, Charlotte’s father set up the charity, which now helps young disadvantaged people realise their performing talents.

Sandra Chapman, Lecturer in Events Management at Newcastle College, said ‘’This is an amazing opportunity to see the up and coming talent in the college, which is well known for nurturing some well known faces and voices within the entertainment industry. The audience will also have the opportunity to watch some of the former cast from Billy Elliott – and its all for a cause that is dear to our hearts‘’.

Guest judges from the industry will be in attendance and the audience can also participate in a raffle with a range of prizes donated from well known companies.

Scouting for Talent has been organised by the Performance Academy’s own student event management team, Epic Events. Epic’s marketing manager, Katie Doyle, said “This event will be a great evening of entertainment, as well helping to continue Charlotte’s legacy through the charity, which supports and gives opportunities to young performers”.

Tickets for this event are on sale at £5 from the Performance Academy’s Box Office on 0191 226 7510 or email craig.hissett@ncl-coll.ac.uk Tickets can be pre-paid and collected on the evening or purchased on the night.

Newcastle College students awarded £25,000 loan to teach people to act

Overcoming Theatre 2

TWO 20 year old contemporary acting students at Newcastle College have been awarded £25,000 under Lord Young’s StartUp Loan scheme to help teach people to act.

Entrepreneurs Daniel Middlewood and Conor Lowson, from Jesmond, Newcastle, recently launched their own company, Overcoming Theatre, with the help of a £3,600 cash prize from a Business and Enterprise Challenge at Newcastle College.

Now the lads believe there is a gap in the marketplace to teach acting in a way that makes it accessible to people from all walks of life, providing them with the skills to act at a professional level, as well as develop a greater appreciation of theatre.

Daniel said, ‘’We’re both ecstatic about the opportunity that’s been given to us by being awarded this loan. The grounding we’ve been given in acting at Newcastle College has inspired us to pass on our love of theatre and performance to others and we know just how to do that’’.

The students, who are currently studying a BA Hons in Contemporary Acting at Newcastle College, plan the roll out of a number of workshops for the public and they will even employ out of work actors to help facilitate the sessions that are open to all. They will also develop an educational, drama website.

Conor added, ‘’Getting the loan is a fantastic achievement. We plan to revolutionise theatre and how acting is taught’’.

Daniel and Conor are currently performing a 50 day nationwide tour of their movement and physical theatre production, ‘’Being’’, as part of their Big Theatre Campaign. The performances are taking place in schools and public spaces from John O’Groats, through the Highlands of Scotland and in major cities across the UK to Lands End and London from now until the autumn.

Gavin Huscroft, Acting Tutor at Newcastle College, said ‘’We are very proud of Daniel and Conor and what they have set out to achieve. Newcastle College provides its students with the support and encouragement they need to go out into the world and succeed in their chosen profession. Overcoming Theatre is a fantastic example of entrepreneurial, owner-business success’’.

Overcoming Theatre has benefitted from StartUp Loans, a Government-backed project launched by Lord Young Graffham last year and which offers loans to any young person wanting to start a business. More information about the loans can be found at http://www.startupbritain.co/loans/

College record label to celebrate its first EP release

The Face

A local record label set up and managed by students at Newcastle College is preparing to kick start its next stage of development with its first major EP release.

Newcastle College’s Push Puzzle Records will release The Power by Newcastle band The Face this Thursday 7 February and the release will be supported by a gig at the college’s Space Bar venue to showcase the huge amount of musical talent that already exists on the label.

The Face has already attracted the attention of some of the UK’s best known artists, including indie stalwarts Ocean Colour Scene and legendary rock band Whitesnake, both of which The Face has supported at one-off shows.

The band is fronted by former Newcastle College student Sean Hainey, 24, who takes his influences from classic bands such as the Beatles and The Kinks, while creating his own unique sound in the process.

Lead singer and songwriter Sean said: “Without the help of Push Puzzle Records I would not have got many of the chances I have had, such as supporting the likes of Whitesnake and Ocean Colour Scene. The EP is sounding amazing and the high times are awaiting us!”

Push Puzzle Records is managed by 2nd year Foundation Degree Popular Music students at Newcastle College’s Performance Academy as a way of giving them practical experience of how the music industry works so that they are better prepared once they finish their studies.

The free to attend EP launch event will take place at Space Bar on Newcastle College’s Rye Hill campus and will include a performance by The Face plus support from fast-rising local band, Built Like a Gun, as well as DJs. Doors open at 6pm this Thursday 7 February.

Scott Baker-Marflitt, Real Working Environment Co-ordinator in the music section of Newcastle College and who also oversees the management of Push Puzzle, said: “The release of Push Puzzle Records’ first EP is a major step forward for the label as it looks to establish itself as a major source of musical talent in the North East.

‘’There is a real buzz surrounding The Face and this release will no doubt help to further increase the band’s exposure. The more Push Puzzle establishes itself, the more our students will get out of it’’.

The EP launch is one of the many ways in which Newcastle College is supporting the North East’s new musical talent, with its state-of-the-art Performance Academy offering a wide range of creatively stimulating courses, including a new BTEC in Music for DJ Producers. The college also recently launched a new range of Songwriting courses that have been designed in conjunction with professional songwriter Peter Brewis, whose band Field Music competed for last year’s Mercury Music Prize.

Ceramics students and staff at Newcastle College are to display their work alongside internationally recognised artists at a unique exhibition.

Creative Spirit, which takes place at the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead between January 25 and February 14, will see Contemporary Ceramic Practice Foundation Degree students from Newcastle College display a wide range of ceramic creations, from figurative sculptures to an installation of hundreds of fine porcelain leaves, as part of their course work.

The students undertook a design brief to make ceramic work inspired by pieces on display in the ‘Designs for Life’ collection at the gallery, before turning the tables on their lecturers and course leaders by challenging them to produce their own exhibits.

The exhibition will also play host to an Interactive Ceramic Activity Day on Saturday February 9, where visitors will get the chance to test their own skills on the potter’s wheel, as well as handle exhibits within the gallery’s unique Rothschild ceramics collection.

Providing the public with a unique insight into his work during the Interactive Ceramic Activity Day will be acclaimed artist William Shannon, who will also be showcasing his creations at the Shipley as part of the Jerwood Makers Open exhibition, which coincides with Creative Spirit and runs from February 9 and July 6.

The world renowned Jerwood Makers Open exhibition is currently touring the UK after opening at Jerwood Space in London last July. It brings together new works by emerging artists Nao Matsunaga, James Rigler, Louis Thompson and Silvia Weidenbach, in addition to William Shannon.

Christine Constant, ceramics Lecturer at Newcastle College, said: “This exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for students at Newcastle College to rub creative shoulders with some of the UK’s most talented award winning artists. Our students have produced some outstanding ceramic work that rightly deserves to be showcased within a prestigious gallery like the Shipley.”

Newcastle College offers a range of courses involving ceramics, including a Foundation Degree in Contemporary Applied Arts and a number of part time courses.

Virginia Wilkinson, Learning Officer at the Shipley Art Gallery, said: “The quality of the work within the Creative Spirit exhibition reflects the unique talents of each one of these exciting new artists. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the work of new ceramicists alongside works by internationally recognised artists.”

Newcastle College students have the right chemistry for success at global company

Tara Aziz
Two Newcastle College students have secured full time roles with international consumer goods manufacturer Procter & Gamble (P&G) after completing the firm’s highly sought after internship programme.

Tara Aziz and Ben Miley were chosen by P&G in 2010 to follow the two year programme at its Newcastle Innovation Centre in Longbenton and will now work with the company to develop its large range of iconic global brands, which include Ariel, Pampers, Gillette and Olay.

Tara, from Cramlington, was chosen for the internship programme while studying a Foundation Degree in Analytical Chemistry at Newcastle College. The 23 year old has now been employed as a Senior Operator in Particle Characterisation after completing her training, which involved developing methods and analysing data, among other responsibilities.

Tara, who is currently studying a top-up Degree in Applied Sciences at Newcastle College, has also written standard operating procedures for P&G, which have been issued globally throughout the company.

She said: “Being chosen for P&G‘s internship programme was an amazing opportunity and I’m over the moon to be offered a full time role. If it wasn’t for Newcastle College I wouldn’t have known about the programme or had the right training needed to prove myself within such a major company.”

Ben, from Wallsend, studied an Access Diploma in Engineering and a Foundation Degree in Renewable Energies before being chosen by P&G for the internship programme. His internship saw him work in the firm’s large scale pilot plant as part of the firm’s Operations Crew, where he helped to set up and run a number of production trials.

The 26 year old is now employed as a Pilot Plant Senior Operator at the firm, and is also studying towards a top-up Degree in Electrical Electronic Engineering at Newcastle College.

The internship scheme was set by Newcastle College to give students within its School of Applied Science and Technology the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with one of the world’s leading producers of consumer brands. Students spend four days each week at the Newcastle Innovation Centre and one week day per week studying at the college.

The scheme is part of Newcastle College‘s School of Applied Science and Technology’s support for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) agenda. The school works in close collaboration with organisations across all areas of expertise, including engineering, automotive, aerospace and allied engineering, vocational science, and renewable Energy.

Shirley Summers, Associate Talent Supply Manager for P&G UK and Ireland, said: ”We have been very impressed by the standard of people that we have recruited from Newcastle College for our internship programme. Recruiting the right people direct from college is a new route for us, but the results are very encouraging. By working with Newcastle College, we can be assured that we are identifying people with exactly the right kind of skills, passion and talent that we need.”

Newcastle College students gain unique insight into new Sixth Form development

BAM Training

Construction students from Newcastle College are now among the first people to see inside the new landmark Newcastle Sixth Form College development after visiting the site as part of their training.

The five students, who are all working towards an NVQ Level 3 Heating and Ventilation Installation (Commercial) apprenticeship, were invited by on-site contractors BAM to take part in a guided tour of the site and were given a unique insight into what it takes to work on such a major project.

Adrian Cairns, Services Engineering Director at BAM, was on hand to cover everything from the building’s under-floor heating systems to the installation of high specification chilled beams, which are used to regulate temperature as well as control lighting.

The students also gained access to the building’s roof in order to see how the complex air coolant system operates as well as get a peek of the building’s spectacular panoramic views of the city.

Taking part in the tour were 21-year-old Jordan Cook, who is from Gateshead and is an apprentice with the Upnorth Group, Andrew Miller, 21, who is from Chester-le-Street and is an apprentice at Newcastle City Council, Perry McAllister, 19, who is from Washington and is an apprentice with Kennedy Services Ltd, James Douglas, 28, who is from Blyth and is an apprentice with HLA Services, and 19-year-old Ross Dickinson, who is from Newcastle and is completing his apprenticeship at Newcastle City Council.

Five more Newcastle College students are due to visit the site on November 29, all of whom are studying an NVQ Level 2 Heating and Ventilation Installation (Commercial) apprenticeship.

Adrian Cairns said: “It’s great to be able to give these students the chance to see inside a real working building site on the scale of Newcastle Sixth Form College. Visits like these are important in making sure that students know exactly what to expect when they finish their studies. I’d love to think that someday I’ll be taking lessons from one of these students about the next generation of heating and ventilation systems.”

The new Newcastle Sixth Form College building is due for completion in February next year and will become the first dedicated Sixth Form College in the city, providing a world class learning environment for GCSE, A Level, AS Level and International Baccalaureate students.

The 11,000 sq metre building will include specialised facilities in classrooms, as well as performance studios and laboratories. At the heart of the building there will be an open-plan, light and airy social space with a bistro serving drinks and snacks.

Reg Whitehead, Course Tutor for Heating and Ventilation at Newcastle College, said: “It was great for the students to see how their knowledge is put into practice as part of a development as impressive as Newcastle Sixth Form College. Newcastle College has built up a great relationship with BAM throughout this project and I would like to thank all those involved in these important site visits.”
