Largest provider of HE in FE breaks the mould with Foundation Degree Awarding Powers

NCG, the country’s largest provider of HE in an FE college, has been awarded Foundation Degree Awarding Powers.

This represents a major breakthrough for the Further Education sector and puts colleges on a similar footing to universities, which have monopolised the degree awarding market up to now.

NCG offers more than 85 Foundation Degrees and Honours Degrees in a wide range of subjects and has a successful track record of providing learners with fantastic learning experiences.

This groundbreaking development follows on from an intensive and rigorous scrutiny process by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education, who recognised that NCG’s HE provision provides a high quality offer to students equivalent to that of a university and that NCG is a mature organisation capable of regulating its own quality standards.

NCG will to use its new powers to build on its strengths as an outstanding HE provider. Through the development of its own degrees that meet the needs of employers and provide higher level skills, thousands of people will secure employment and progress through their careers for the benefit of the economy.

NCG announced its very competitive HE tuition fees recently. It has set its maximum HE tuition fee at £5,800, which is significantly lower than that of many other HE providers and ensures that students have the choice of a high quality degree at a price they can afford.

Dame Jackie Fisher, Chief Executive of NCG, said: “We are delighted to be able to award our own Foundation Degrees. Foundation Degree Awarding Powers creates a platform for us to forge ahead with our plans for Taught Degree Awarding Powers and gives us the opportunity to provide students with degrees that will give them the skills to get jobs and progress in their careers.”

Newcastle College announces HE fees of £5,800 for 2012

Newcastle College today announced its intention to set its higher education tuition fees at £5,800 from September 2012.

The college, which is one of the largest providers of HE in FE in the country, offers a wide range of Foundation, Honours and Masters Degrees to over 3,500 students each year.

The £5,800 fee is around £3,000 less than the Government’s maximum fee limit and demonstrates the college’s commitment to offering outstanding quality higher education at an affordable price to its students.

The college works extensively with employers to develop its HE curriculum to ensure that all provision meets the needs of industry and responds to national skills gaps in key sector areas.

By developing new and exciting modes of delivery, the college will also provide flexible opportunities for students to learn and offer them the potential to accelerate their studies and continue in employment whist gaining valuable higher education qualifications.

Newcastle College has developed a strong reputation based on excellent quality in HE. In its most recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) inspection, reviewers gave the college the best possible ratings for academic standards and the quality of the learning experience. Twelve areas of good practice were highlighted, including employer engagement.

Bev Robinson, Principal of Newcastle College, said: “High level skill development is vital to assisting economic recovery. By offering a wide range of high quality HE courses at a competitive price, Newcastle College is committed to protecting learning, promoting social mobility and working with employers to address regional and national high level skill needs.

IB student calculates success with world-class exam results

A Newcastle Sixth Form College student has proved he is one of the best in the country by receiving almost full marks in the International Baccalaureate (IB).

Connor Russell, 18 from Sunniside, collected his results today and was awarded 43 out of a maximum of 45 marks, placing him well above the national average.

Connor, who has been accepted into the London School of Economics, achieved full marked in five of his subjects, including Higher Levels Maths.

The percentage of students awarded the full IB Diploma was well above the IB world average.

Newcastle College is the only IB world school in the city. The IB is a challenging two year programme of international education for 16-18 year olds and is an alternative to A Levels. It leads to a highly valued qualification that is recognised by universities and employers across the world.

The IB was founded in 1968 and is studied by more than 746,000 students world-wide. Students take six core subjects, with an additional chosen subject. They are also required to study an extended essay on a topic of choice; Creative, Action, Service (CAS), including involvement in creative activity, sport and student engagement in social work or community engagement and Theory of Knowledge (ToK), a course of at least 100 hours which encourages students to be critical thinkers.

Connor said: “I can’t believe my results. I thought I had done well, but would never have imagined that I would get maximum points in five of my 6 subjects. The IB has been a fantastic experience, developing me personally as well as academically and I am now very excited to continue my education at the London School of Economics.”

Lynda Evans, Senior Manager in Newcastle Sixth Form College, said: “This is an outstanding achievement for our students. The IB is a highly valued qualification which is welcomed by universities across the world, due to the range of topics covered and the emphasis on encouraging students to be critical thinkers and consider the environment that they live in. We are particularly delighted for Connor.

“This is the highest mark a student at the college has ever achieved and will undoubtedly one of the best marks in the country this year. Connor’s acceptance to London School of Economics is testament to the value of the IB and the various progression routes available to students on the course.”
